About Podcasting

What is a Podcast?
Plainly put, it’s an audio broadcast made available on the Internet. Almost every computer these days, has a Media Player, that plays the MP3 audio files that podcasts are created in. An MP3 is just a type of digital audio file.

How Do I Play the Podcast?
Since most computers have a Media Player, if you go to a web site that has a podcast show on it, you click on the show (usually there’s a listen or play or download button) and your Media Player should automatically pop up and play the audio file.

Our button looks like this:

Download? What do you mean ‘download’?
To download an audio file (the show), you would use the right button on your mouse. It will bring up a pull-down window, which gives you choices. You would select ‘save target as’ in most cases, and decide where to put the file on your computer. Then you can play it at your convenience, or download it again to a portable MP3 player, like an iPod.

What if I just want to listen to it without downloading it onto my computer?
No problemo. Just use the left button on your mouse, look for our  button, and it should stream live to your computer media player. It won’t be saved on your computer, it’s streaming from the site you are at.

Do I have to have an iPod or MP3 player to hear the show?
No. An iPod or other MP3 player is just a portable audio player that plays digital audio files, be it music, digital movies or a show like this one.

What does it mean to ‘subscribe’ to your program?
All that means, is that there is a way to be notified via your computer and internet connection, of any new episodes we create, automatically. If you subscribe, you download a program that informs you of new shows when they are available. Pretty nifty, eh?

Is there a charge to subscribe?
Nope. Most sources don’t charge fees to listen to, or be a subscriber to a podcast show. Many are created by people who just have a passion for what they are interested in. Others, like AlternativesRadio.com, solicit sponsors and advertisers to cover our costs for creating and producing the shows. The shows are free to you as a listener. Just like TV and Radio.

Are your shows on at certain times?
No. Our shows are all prerecorded. We have a schedule of shows and topics, and we debut a show on a specific date, leaving it accessible 24/7 to you on the internet. Exactly how long  the shows will be on the internet, that’s something we’ll adjust as we go along. Think of this like an ‘on demand cable movie’ as such. Only instead of choosing a movie on your TV screen, you go online, go to our web site and choose a show you’d like to listen to (or download to your computer) and then select the show.
